Scientific Programme
The call for Late Breaking Poster Abstracts will be open until 1 August 2023.
The new submission type for IMOG: “late breaking” poster submissions was first introduced in 2019. It is now actively used and gives our community the chance to submit for poster presentations for work completed after the main abstract submission deadline. This flexibility provides us with excellent poster presentations highlighting the latest work. I am pleased to announce that we will continue to run this programme for 2023.
Submission Topics

Submission Instructions
EAOG and EAGE invite the presentation of new and original material in a range of multidisciplinary topics in organic geochemistry. EAOG and EAGE take plagiarism very seriously. Therefore, if an (extended) abstract or paper, after careful review, examination and consideration, is rejected on the basis of plagiarism, ALL authors of the abstract/paper will be denied the opportunity for further abstract submissions for the following three years. Note that this means that NO abstracts/papers from ANY of the authors (as author or co-author on subsequent papers) will be accepted for ANY EAOG or EAGE event (Annual Meeting or Workshop) for a period of three years starting on the date of the event for which the paper was originally submitted.
Your abstract should be written in English according to the following IMOG 2025 submission instructions:
- The IMOG 2025 Conference template must be used; margins may not be changed;
- The use of sections is optional. If sections are used, the section headers must be in bold;
- Start your abstract (text or section header) directly under the EAOG logo;
- Abstract title must be maximum 2 lines.
- List of authors needs to be included with first names in initials, surname, company names indicated with numbers.
- Example authors: Example companies: - - - - L. Bras1, A. Smith2, J.A. Surname1 1House of Geoscience, Netherlands, 2 University Name, France
- Used font is Times New Roman font, 12 pts with single line space. Set the alignment to justified and use standard Word outline (body text);
- All margins are set to 1 inch (2.54 cm);
- Supply a short caption for your graphic and/or table in italics.
- Please keep in mind to include references where applicable.
The abstract should be submitted in MS Word or PDF format. If submitted in PDF format, please make sure the file is not protected.
The €50.00 abstract submission fee for IMOG 2025 is a one-time fee per primary author (regardless of the number of abstracts submitted by the same author). The fee will be applied toward IMOG 2025 registration if the abstract is accepted and presented at IMOG 2025. If the abstract is accepted, but you do not register for or attend the symposium, the fee is non-refundable and your abstract and/or expanded abstract will not be included in the proceedings.
Your abstract will be uploaded using an online submission tool. During the submission process, you will be requested to enter some additional information (i.e. your name and email address, your preference for an oral or poster presentation and the topic you wish to submit your abstract for).
Submission deadline for the Scientific Programme
Please note that the submission deadline is 15 February 2025, 23:59 (CET). The portal will close automatically after this deadline. Abstracts received after this date will not be included in review.
Changes after the submission deadline
Please note that it is not possible to make changes to the submission information (e.g. add or delete co-authors) or the uploaded abstract after the submission.
Selection Process
The Scientific Committee will consider all abstracts submitted via the portal and included in the review process.
Publication
The accepted abstract will be included in the proceedings as submitted, authors are strongly encouraged to submit abstracts written in satisfactory English, the official language of the conference. The Scientific Committee will reserve the right to reject abstracts of low scientific or likely presentation standard.

- If you withdraw your abstract by 15 August 2025, it will not be included in the conference proceedings.
- If you withdraw you abstract after 15 August 2025, we will try to remove it from the conference proceedings. However, the proceedings may already have been taken into production by then. In that case, it is not possible to remove the abstract from the proceedings anymore.
Please note: EAOG and EAGE cannot be held liable for any loss, damage, direct, indirect or consequential damage as a result of withdrawal, removal or non-removal of the abstract in any way.
Some Advice on Writing a Good Abstract
The below outlining by Esther Bloem, a longtime contributor to EAGE events and publications, and a member of our Near Surface Division, shows the steps required for putting together an abstract. First-time submitters should find this particularly useful.
Before you start writing
Make a planning. Writing an abstract is not done in just one hour. Think of:
- When is the deadline for submission? To prevent last minute problems, try to submit early, at least 24 hours before the deadline is recommended.
- Go through the online submission to check what requirements are needed besides the abstract like authors, title, summary, keywords, etc. Avoid last minute surprises.
- Download the mandatory template to be used for your extended abstract.
- What are the requirements for the abstracts for the event? For example, the number of pages
Let the writing begin
Write down the message you would like to present. This is the objective of your abstract. Think of:
- What aspect of your research would you like to present?
- On which aspect of your research do you like to get feedback?
- What is the most groundbreaking result(s) you have?
- What will your audience be interested in?
- Normally for an article, there can only be one message. Keep this simple. People should not get confused.
Select your figures
- These visually show the message of your study. A figure can sometimes tell more than thousands words.
- Make sure to check the figures are readable at print size.
Writing the 2 page abstract,
- which should include introduction,
- materials and methods,
- results and discussion,
- conclusions and references.
The abstract should be readable, stand alone and complete.
Start (after you have your objective and figures copied to the abstract) with the materials and methods.
This is what you have done. How is the study performed? The reader should be able to repeat the study after reading the M&M
Write results.
- What are the results of the performed study?
Write discussion.
- In the discussion focus on combining results and answering your objective.
- What is additional in this study to existing literature?
Write the introduction. This includes:
- The background
- The problem you are addressing
- The objective of your study
Write conclusions.
Conclusions must give answer on your objective. Check that the results and discussion support the conclusion.
Write the references and acknowledgement.
Do not forget a title, which covers the objective of this study and to include the relevant co-authors.
Let them review your abstract before submission.

Guidelines for Speakers
A good oral presentation has a clear objective, a well-defined structure and uses clear and simple illustrations.
Objective & Structure
Your objective defines what you wish to achieve with your presentation. To achieve a realistic objective you must consider the characteristics of your audience: their motives for attending your presentation, their interests, their knowledge level and their intentions.
The structure of a good presentation is as follows:
- Define the subject, give a general outline and state the goals of your presentation in your introduction.
- Work out your presentation in more detail.
- Summarise and draw conclusions, which refer back to your introduction.
Please be very careful that your presentation is scientific and not commercial. In addition, the company logo or trademarks are allowed only in the first and on the last page of the power point slides.
We recommend you to make an overview with the estimated timing of your presentation and to prepare yourself for questions from the audience. Rehearsal of your presentation is strongly recommended! Please note that presenting to a live audience can take a little longer than during a rehearsal.
It is important to adhere to the time schedule: 20 minutes in total per presentation (in example 15 minutes speaking time and 5 minutes question time).
Poster Presentations
The poster sessions will focus on interaction and informal exchange of ideas and discussions between participants. All on-site poster presenters have in total 60 minutes to present their work during the poster session, including time for questions. However posters will be on display during all day of presenting. This should be mounted between 08:00 hrs and 09:00 hrs (TBC).
If you give your poster presentation on your own merit (see acceptance email), it is not allowed to include the company name, company logo or a reference to the company to your printed poster.
What to Prepare?
A0 Poster (Printed) using mandatory Poster Template (pdf) or Poster Template (ppt).
In order to obtain a design for your poster which aims to generate active discussion it is recommended to:
- Include the paper reference (abstract number) and presentation title on your poster;
- Place the highlights at eye level (i.e. the upper half of the wall element);
- Divide each poster into at least three equal columns for readability of text. Illustrations may extend over 2 or 3 columns;
- Text and Character Size:
- Word-process all text (including captions) and print on a plain light coloured background.
- Use a minimum font size of 18 points. (Text should be readable from 2 meters away.)
- Illustrations:
- Should have a resolution of 300 dpi to be suitable for printing on A0.
- Should be placed large enough on the poster so it is readable from five feet away.
- Poster Format:
- The maximum allowed paper size is A0.
- There is one (1) poster board available per presentation; you are required to use ‘Portrait’ layout for your poster.
Please be very careful that your presentation is scientific and not commercial. In addition, the company logo or trademarks are allowed only in small size on the poster.

As soon as the form has been processed, you will receive an automated notification to confirm that you the system will then recognize you as ‘Confirmed speaker’.
2. Inform us of the co-author who will replace you as presenter
If a co-author will give the presentation, the submission needs to be moved to their account. To do so, we need the name and email address of the co-author. Please keep in mind that the email address that you mention and the login name used by the co-author to access the EAGE website need to be the same.
If the co-author does not have an account yet, they need to create one on the EAGE website.
3. Withdraw your presentation
If you have to withdraw your presentation, please keep in mind to do so by 15 April 2023 (23:59 CEST) at the latest. Organizers
The European Association of Organic Geochemists (EAOG) was founded in 1983 and has its seat in The Hague. The organisation has strong European roots but boasts an international membership and pursues a global agenda. It seeks to promote organic geochemistry in its broadest sense by encouraging collaboration between its scientists and those from other disciplines.
We convene International Meetings every two years. The latest information on current and future meetings is detailed on our Meetings page.
Our official journal is Organic Geochemistry.
The EAOG has over 450 members and it is still increasing. You don’t have to be European to be a member of the EAOG. Our members come from around the globe – the Americas, Asia, Australasia, Africa and Europe – currently over 50 countries in all.
The European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE) is a global professional, not-for-profit association for geoscientists and engineers with approximately 19,000 members worldwide. It provides a global network of commercial and academic professionals to all members. The association is truly multi-disciplinary and international in form and pursuits.
All members of EAGE are professionally involved in (or studying) geophysics, petroleum exploration, geology, reservoir engineering, mining and mineral exploration, civil engineering, tunneling and environmental matters. EAGE operates two divisions: the Oil & Gas Geoscience Division and the Near Surface Geoscience Division.
EAGE organizes the following activities for its members:
- Events (conferences, exhibitions, workshops)
- Publications (journals, books)
- Educational Programs (short courses, webinars, lectures)
- Student Programs

Event Overview
Dear Colleagues,
I am delighted to welcome you to the 31st International Meeting on Organic Geochemistry (IMOG) now scheduled to take place from 10–15 September 2023 in Montpellier, France.
During the 2021 on-line meeting we had over 400 delegates joining us from 41 different countries across the globe. After the success of 2021, we are more confident than ever that our community will evolve and continue to grow.
As with each IMOG, 2023 will stand on its own as an innovative conference, bringing together the best minds in the field of organic matter cycles over geological and modern time scales as well as integrated paleoenvironmental and climatic studies. In addition, our industry colleagues continue to bring tools and understanding needed to improve the full life cycle activities in exploration, production, decommissioning as well as new relevant energies.
We are happy once again to have the opportunity to discuss, network, and develop amongst friends and peers. I am certain that the conference will once again push the boundaries of the field and facilitate new ways for connecting our community.
On behalf of EAOG, I am looking forward to welcoming you in Montpellier!
Pim van Bergen
EAOG Chair
Event Update
The new submission type for IMOG: “late breaking” poster submissions was first introduced in 2019. It is now actively used and gives our community the chance to submit for poster presentations for work completed after the main abstract submission deadline. This flexibility provides us with excellent poster presentations highlighting the latest work. I am pleased to announce that we will continue to run this programme for 2023.
The 31st International Meeting on Organic Geochemistry (IMOG 2023) will be held in Montpellier, France, from 10-15 September, 2023. For the fourth time the conference will be organized by the European Association of Organic Geochemists in cooperation with the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE). The official biennial conference of the European Association of Organic Geochemists (EAOG) is the largest meeting on Organic Geochemistry.
The guiding principle of the IMOG meetings is to encourage presentation, communication and discussion of research results carried out in academia and industry in the fields of Organic Geochemistry with topics ranging from biogeochemistry to petroleum geochemistry.
We are expecting more than 500 participants from all over the world with dozens of oral presentations and up to 500 poster presentations. In addition, an exhibition is also being organized to facilitate knowledge transfer and business among the geochemical community.
Event Overview
Dear Colleagues,
It is with great pleasure and anticipation that I extend a warm welcome to all participants to the 2025 International Meeting of Organic Geochemistry in Porto, Portugal, 7 – 12 September 2025. As Chair of the European Association of Organic Geochemistry, it is an honour to announce our 32nd biennial gathering, which marks a significant milestone in our organization’s history.
The European Association of Organic Geochemistry has been at the forefront of advancing research and fostering collaboration for more than 60 years. From the beginning, EAOG has led IMOG to continually push the boundaries of scientific exploration, contributing invaluable insights to our understanding of Earth’s history and processes. As we explore and expand our mandate, we have welcomed evolving science from marine and terrestrial systems focused on biogeochemistry, paleoenvironments and climate change, as well as analytical innovations.
Our roots also include petroleum and coal geochemistry to obtain knowledge about the ‘origin and constitution’ of naturally occurring petroleum. The geochemical knowledge gained – and the tools, samples, and analysis developed and disseminated – have been foundational to both earth science and to an industry now reckoning with a future which adheres to Paris agreement pledges to limit global warming to 1.5 °C, and ensures a just and equitable energy transition for all.
From the imperative of the energy transition to the urgent need for a deeper understanding of climate change, our discipline stands as a cornerstone of scientific inquiry. Through our efforts together, we will decipher the intricacies of Earth’s past and illuminate pathways toward a sustainable future. Our diverse and dedicated community is unique and essential to study and solve the challenges in this unprecedented period in human history.
On behalf of the European Association of Organic Geochemistry, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all participants, sponsors, and organisers for their dedication and support.
Best regards,
Courtney Turich
