Scientific Programme

The guiding principle of the IMOG meetings is to encourage presentation, communication and discussion of research results carried out in academia and industry in the fields of Organic Geochemistry with topics ranging from biogeochemistry to petroleum geochemistry.

The call for abstracts closed on 9 February. The Scientific Committee will review the submissions and a programme will be announced in mid-April. If you missed the deadline but still wish to present your work at IMOG 2023 you can still submit your late-breaking abstract for poster presentation.

Late Breaking Poster Abstracts

The call for Late Breaking Poster Abstracts will be open until 1 August 2023.

The new submission type for IMOG: “late breaking” poster submissions was first introduced in 2019. It is now actively used and gives our community the chance to submit for poster presentations for work completed after the main abstract submission deadline. This flexibility provides us with excellent poster presentations highlighting the latest work. I am pleased to announce that we will continue to run this programme for 2023.

Submission Topics

The topics for IMOG 2023 are listed below:

Biogeochemistry The origin, diversity, properties, and interpretative potential of bio-to geo-molecules

Paleoenvironments & Paleoclimates The interpretation of diverse families of organic geomolecules to better understand past environments and climate

Petroleum & Coal Geochemistry The use and interpretation of molecules specifically related to naturally occurring petroleum, gases, and coals

Soil & Wetland Geochemistry The specific use of soil and wetland (e.g., terrestrial) molecules in both modern and ancient settings

New Trends & Sustainability in Organic Geochemistry This topic again serves to promote and disseminate new ways of producing and using organic geochemistry data. Topics using new analytical techniques/approaches, advanced data evaluation tools such as Machine Learning, and addresses the scientific basic for achieving Sustainability goals (e.g. sources and sinks of GHG and microplastics, remediation, organics in aqueous fluids) are especially welcome.

Submission Instructions

EAOG and EAGE invite the presentation of new and original material in a range of multidisciplinary topics in organic geochemistry. EAOG and EAGE take plagiarism very seriously. Therefore, if an (extended) abstract or paper, after careful review, examination and consideration, is rejected on the basis of plagiarism, ALL authors of the abstract/paper will be denied the opportunity for further abstract submissions for the following three years. Note that this means that NO abstracts/papers from ANY of the authors (as author or co-author on subsequent papers) will be accepted for ANY EAOG or EAGE event (Annual Meeting or Workshop) for a period of three years starting on the date of the event for which the paper was originally submitted.

Your abstract should be written in English according to the following Submission Guidelines:

  • The conference template must be used; margins may not be changed;
  • The use of sections is optional. If sections are used, the section headers must be in bold;
  • Start your abstract (text or section header) directly under the EAOG logo;
  • Abstract title must be maximum 2 lines.
  • List of authors needs to be included with first names in initials, surname, company names indicated with numbers.
  • Example authors: Example companies: - - - - L. Bras1, A. Smith2, J.A. Surname1 1House of Geoscience, Netherlands, 2 University Name, France
  • Used font is Times New Roman font, 12 pts with single line space. Set the alignment to justified and use standard Word outline (body text);
  • All margins are set to 1 inch (2.54 cm);
  • Supply a short caption for your graphic and/or table in italics.
  • Please keep in mind to include references where applicable.

The abstract should be submitted in MS Word or PDF format. If submitted in PDF format, please make sure the file is not protected.

The €50.00 abstract submission fee for IMOG 2023 is a one-time fee per primary author (regardless of the number of abstracts submitted by the same author). The fee will be applied toward IMOG 2023 registration if the abstract is accepted and presented at IMOG 2023. If the abstract is accepted, but you do not register for or attend the symposium, the fee is non-refundable and your abstract and/or expanded abstract will not be included in the proceedings.

Your abstract will be uploaded using an online submission tool. During the submission process, you will be requested to enter some additional information (i.e. your name and email address, your preference for an oral or poster presentation and the topic you wish to submit your abstract for).

Submission deadline for the Scientific Programme
Please note that the submission deadline is 1 August 2023, 23:59 (CET). The portal will close automatically after this deadline. Abstracts received after this date will not be included in review.

Changes after the submission deadline
Please note that it is not possible to make changes to the submission information (e.g. add or delete co-authors) or the uploaded abstract after the submission.

Selection Process
The Scientific Committee will consider all abstracts submitted via the portal and included in the review process.

Publication

The accepted abstract will be included in the proceedings as submitted, authors are strongly encouraged to submit abstracts written in satisfactory English, the official language of the conference. The Scientific Committee will reserve the right to reject abstracts of low scientific or likely presentation standard.

In case you want to withdraw your abstract, please inform us as soon as possible and keep the following deadlines in mind:

  • If you withdraw your abstract by 15 August 2023, it will not be included in the conference proceedings.
  • If you withdraw you abstract after 15 August 2023, we will try to remove it from the conference proceedings. However, the proceedings may already have been taken into production by then. In that case, it is not possible to remove the abstract from the proceedings anymore.

Please note: EAOG and EAGE cannot be held liable for any loss, damage, direct, indirect or consequential damage as a result of withdrawal, removal or non-removal of the abstract in any way.

Some Advice on Writing a Good Abstract

The below outlining by Esther Bloem, a longtime contributor to EAGE events and publications, and a member of our Near Surface Division, shows the steps required for putting together an abstract. First-time submitters should find this particularly useful.

Before you start writing

Make a planning. Writing an abstract is not done in just one hour. Think of:

  • When is the deadline for submission? To prevent last minute problems, try to submit early, at least 24 hours before the deadline is recommended.
  • Go through the online submission to check what requirements are needed besides the abstract like authors, title, summary, keywords, etc. Avoid last minute surprises.
  • Download the mandatory template to be used for your extended abstract.
  • What are the requirements for the abstracts for the event? For example, the number of pages

Let the writing begin

Write down the message you would like to present. This is the objective of your abstract. Think of:

  • What aspect of your research would you like to present?
  • On which aspect of your research do you like to get feedback?
  • What is the most groundbreaking result(s) you have?
  • What will your audience be interested in?
  • Normally for an article, there can only be one message. Keep this simple. People should not get confused.
1

Select your figures

  • These visually show the message of your study. A figure can sometimes tell more than thousands words.
  • Make sure to check the figures are readable at print size.
2

Writing the 2 page abstract,

  • which should include introduction,
  • materials and methods,
  • results and discussion,
  • conclusions and references.

The abstract should be readable, stand alone and complete.

3

Start (after you have your objective and figures copied to the abstract) with the materials and methods.
This is what you have done. How is the study performed? The reader should be able to repeat the study after reading the M&M

4

Write results.

  • What are the results of the performed study?
5

Write discussion.

  • In the discussion focus on combining results and answering your objective.
  • What is additional in this study to existing literature?
6

Write the introduction. This includes:

    • The background
    • The problem you are addressing
    • The objective of your study
7

Write conclusions.

Conclusions must give answer on your objective. Check that the results and discussion support the conclusion.

8

Write the references and acknowledgement.

9

Do not forget a title, which covers the objective of this study and to include the relevant co-authors.

Let them review your abstract before submission.

Organizers

EAOG

The European Association of Organic Geochemists (EAOG) was founded in 1983 and has its seat in The Hague. The organisation has strong European roots but boasts an international membership and pursues a global agenda. It seeks to promote organic geochemistry in its broadest sense by encouraging collaboration between its scientists and those from other disciplines.

We convene International Meetings every two years. The latest information on current and future meetings is detailed on our Meetings page.

Our official journal is Organic Geochemistry.

The EAOG has over 450 members and it is still increasing. You don’t have to be European to be a member of the EAOG. Our members come from around the globe – the Americas, Asia, Australasia, Africa and Europe – currently over 50 countries in all.

EAGE [RGB]

The European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE) is a global professional, not-for-profit association for geoscientists and engineers with approximately 19,000 members worldwide. It provides a global network of commercial and academic professionals to all members. The association is truly multi-disciplinary and international in form and pursuits.

All members of EAGE are professionally involved in (or studying) geophysics, petroleum exploration, geology, reservoir engineering, mining and mineral exploration, civil engineering, tunneling and environmental matters. EAGE operates two divisions: the Oil & Gas Geoscience Division and the Near Surface Geoscience Division.

EAGE organizes the following activities for its members:

  • Events (conferences, exhibitions, workshops)
  • Publications (journals, books)
  • Educational Programs (short courses, webinars, lectures)
  • Student Programs
